What are fire sprinklers? Fire Sprinklers are defenses to fire accidents in our homes. We don’t usually give emphasis to this device, but believe me, it is important just like fire defenses.

As mentioned, people usually purchase different security devices and apply different security measures just to assure the safety of our family. Obvious evidences are intruder devices, health insurances, and not to mention security cameras. Fire defenses are as well installed in our homes.

The most common fire defenses in our houses are fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. However, these two are not enough defenses for fire accidents. Fire sprinklers are as important as these two in any fire management process.

Classification of Fire Sprinklers

Generally, fire sprinklers are classified into two kinds. They are the industrial fire sprinklers and the domestic fire sprinklers.

If you are installing fire sprinklers in private houses, it is recommended to use the domestic types. On the other hand, industrial fire sprinklers are suited for office areas. The edge of fire sprinklers lies on how it acts once there is fire. It has an automatic process which means it is not dependent on either batteries or electricity. It releases water supply once it senses that there is an abnormal increase in temperature in the house. This process assures us that the fires are successfully extinguished before it becomes uncontrollable.

When you already installed your fire sprinkler, it does not necessarily mean to get rid of other defenses. If there are vast fire accidents, it can work together with the smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. Making use of the three defenses raises the success of complete firefighting to almost 98%.

It is advisable to install domestic fire sprinklers during the construction phase of your building rather than later stage and also, it saves on costs. There are plenty of fire sprinklers to choose from, but still the best way to choose before purchasing on any merchandise provider is to conduct survey. The installation is being done by experienced people in this field. You can easily identify if the fire sprinkler is installed properly when the sprinkler heads are placed inside the ceiling; since there are pipes behind the wall and ceiling, it must be connected to these areas. One advantage of domestic fire sprinklers is that only sprinklers on the affected part of the house are activated; hence, you can save water.

It is clear to us that safety comes first to our family. Installing these devices may seem costly, but what can money do if the safety and security of our family is at risk.     Kids and fire. You may wonder why some kids are attracted to fire. I really cannot answer that, as that is something that may be just a phase or it is the beginning of a pyromaniac. However, I can help to give ideas to prevent kids from keeping accidental fires at bay.


    One of the biggest problems that families can prevent fires is to check out your smoke alarms. This simple action alone can save your life. Make sure it works!!. It is not the fire that kills you(thank god) it is the smoke that will not allow oxygen for you to breathe, that will suffocate you in your sleep.  Or the odorless gas carbon monoxide.  Which is why you need a co detector at least with in 15 feet of each bedroom.  Now, it is a law in many states.

    Another point is of the use of extension cords. There is a time that is allowed for temporary wiring or cords to usually light up christmas lights or other decorative lighting through the use of extension cords, it is usually 90 days maximum. Under the NEC code,(national electrical code) book, (this book is for electricians and is written by the NFPA, national fire protection agency) the purpose is to control the heat that is generated by using electricity through the insulation that protects the copper wire.

    So, for kids  fire safety protection, we should use tamper resistant outlets, as required by the 2008 nec code. This device is basically used to prevent a single blade to penetrate the outlet, such as a knife. It just allows only a UL listed plug to be inserted.

    Another thing to think about for fire safety for kids is to learn how to use a fire extinguisher to control easy to stop mini fires. Now let me make this clear, the use of the fire extinguisher is used to contain the base of the fire.     * Class A extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics. The numerical rating on these types of extinguishers indicates the amount of water it holds and the amount of fire it can extinguish.
    * Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. The numerical rating for class B extinguishers indicates the approximate number of square feet of fire it can extinguish.
    * Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. Never use water to extinguish class C fires – the risk of electrical shock is far too great! Class C extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The C classification means the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.
    * Class D fire extinguishers are commonly found in a chemical laboratory. They are for fires that involve combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. These types of extinguishers also have no numerical rating, nor are they given a multi-purpose rating – they are designed for class D fires only.

    You may also be interested in designs and layout of fire sprinkler heads if you are required to have these added to your home, which is a good idea for your kids fire safety and yours.  It is also encouraged to get fire safety education.  Many of the public and private schools has the fire marshal come and talk  to kids and also will give demonstrations of how a house burns with some props.

    The last point about fire safety for kids to give you cause to understand is this. If your child is showing a interest in fire is to have the school do a fire demonstration from the local fire department as a demonstration of the hazards. It is not a well concealed secret that firemen love to show fires and it’s devastation.
